People need to think well of themselves

In a shame-based culture (such as ours), shame is a powerful motivator. As in, something to be avoided at all costs. People will tie themselves into the most complicated pretzel knots in order to avoid the tiniest hint of shame.

Watch their stories shift, morphing before your eyes, riding the wave of shame to land on a pure, white shore of blamelessness.

It’s amazing, really, what people will say and do to keep their mental self-image untarnished.
